GLASSES!!!

We picked up Ella’s new glasses last night. Here she is testing them out.

She looks adorable…if I do say so myself. And I have had more than one person comment on how much they make her look like Joe. I did give birth to her…wouldn’t it only be fair for her to look like me at least a little bit?

I left work and met Joe and Ella at the glasses place. Ella, of course, skipped her nap so she fell asleep in the car on the way and Joe had to wake her up to come inside and get her new glasses. She cooperated…she was still very excited to get glasses. When they handed me the glasses to put on her I looked through the little frames and my first thought was how strong the prescription is…then I was overwhelmed with guilt. Our sweet little girl has been walking around unable to see everything clearly. How sad! It made me wish we had gotten her eyes taken care of sooner. I just have to remind myself that we are fortunate to have caught it when we did so that she will hopefully avoid more damage in the future.

She seems to be adjusting well. Sometimes she will look over the top of the glasses, but the doctor told us that was normal and that she would stop doing it in a couple of weeks. During dinner she kept touching her right lens, which resulted in her glasses being coated in ketchup. And several times she went to rub her eyes and couldn’t because of the glasses, but overall she is adapting to them fine. In fact, she seemed to almost forget they were there and she just went on playing just like she always does.

We have gotten a couple of questions about Ella needing glasses. 1) Will they give her boo boos? We don’t know, but we’ll keep you updated on that. We do know of other EB kids who wear glasses without problem, so we are hopeful that Ella will be just like them. 2) Does this have anything to do with her EB? No. The fact that she’s far-sighted has nothing to do with her EB. EB does, however, cause her to have a lot of corneal abrasions which could eventually affect her eyesight if she has a significant amount of scarring.

I know it sounds weird, but there are so many things that we are praising God for with these glasses. First, not once last night did her eyes cross! This means they are doing their job! Second, her eyes are protected from wind and debris, so we are hopeful that this will reduce corneal abrasions. Third, she can’t rub her eyes, which means she will hopefully not cause boo boos around her eyes or on her eye lids. And fourth, they take her cuteness to a whole new level!
